Why your standard 6 week check up just isn't enough

Often I ask women if they were checked for their pelvic floor at their 6 week postnatal check up-

Most women I have spoken to have had one of two experiences:

They get assessed and told ‘you’ve got no pelvic floor, make sure you do your exercises’

OR

They get asked if they have any pelvic floor issues and  if they say no, they do not get an internal pelvic floor examination⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

What do you mean ‘no pelvic floor’?

Why didn't I get examined?

What exercises?

These are the questions I get asked when I chat with women on our first consultation.

Unfortunately a lot of OBGYN’s aren’t able to spend as much time as they would like with women at their 6 week check up (not the OBGYN’s fault!) This means that women are left with only a small amount of information and thousands more questions.

This is why I am such an advocate for a 6 week women's health physiotherapy assessment.

When you go to a 6 week check up with your women's health physio, you will get the chance to ask questions about your symptoms, be asked in depth about common symptoms you may not have realised or noticed, have a full assessment of your body (you’re not just a vagina after you’ve had a baby), and be educated on what is occurring and what is needed to treat it.

You will leave with a specific program tailored to your individual body, not just a handout that treats every woman as a one sized fits all approach. ⠀

EVERY WOMAN should attend a 6 week check up with their women's health Physio, regardless of if they have symptoms or not.
